CIOT Tax Conference

Article Published: October 5, 2015

5As a member firm of the Charted Institute of Taxation (CIOT) we need to adhere to certain professional standards and professional development.

We therefore recently sent Emily off to a WEEKEND Residential Tax Conference . . . Aren’t we nice!!

The CIOT have two residential Tax Conferences every year. One is held in March/April (the Spring Conference) and one is held in September/October (the Autumn Conference).

These conferences are held at Universities, commencing on a Friday and closing on a Sunday. They include 14 hours of lectures and workshops!!

There are also two formal evening dinners consisting of a three course meal and after dinner speaker on the Saturday evening.

There was of course bubbly, wine and port on offer too . . . which naturally had to be tested by Emily to confirm its quality!!

This conference was held in the very lovely setting of Warwick University

Topics covered at this conference included:

  • Managing a Property Portfolio in 2015
  • Non-Residents and UK Property
  • The Pension Minefield
  • The Changing World of Employment Taxes

and – VAT and Trading in the Internet

Highly relevant topics delivered by brilliant speakers.

Emily on the other hand, caused a stir during Giles Mooney‘s presentation, when she caused him to lose his train of thought by dropping her conference folder, jumper, pen and mobile phone. Giles pointed out that it was OK as no-one had noticed!  Which, given the fact that Giles had pointed out her rather less than superior balancing skills, Emily found hard to believe! Interestingly, Giles is also co-founder and presenter on TaxTV – Yes there is such a thing! – and here’s the proof:

Not all was lost though as Emily made some new connections in the world of Tax, including James Cornthwaite, a Chartered Tax Adviser who lives on the beautiful island of Jersey!! If you recall this is where Taxina visited recently. Follow this LINK to find out more!
